Texas 4000: Riding for a Cause

By Rebeca Baptista and Kirsten Kumar

Texas 4000 is a bicycle tour that stretches from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska over each summer. The goal of the trek is to increase cancer awareness and raise funds for research. Each participant has a goal of how much money to raise and must meet it by a determined deadline. The riders train extensively to prepare their bodies and their minds for the 4,500-mile long atlas ride. We interviewed three participants. One, Brooke Willard, rode in the summer of 2012 and offered us an experienced perspective on the ride. The remaining two, Abz Zeitler and Tatiana Jessen, shared a hopeful outlook on their future journey, April 2014 in Austin, Texas.

Tough Livin'

By Rebeca Baptista

This photo story depicts the recent days of Tara Tough. Tara is the daughter of Bruce Tough, the Republican Candidate for Texas State Representative District 15, which makes Tara the daughter of a public official; it's not every day someone meets the daughter of a candidate for public office, so Tara, a UT Austin student, shows us a day in the life of a supportive and dedicated daughter, Feb. 18 2014, in Austin, Texas.
